Jerk or Genius?

When you spend hours upon hours on the internet each day you run into things online that make you think, “Hummm… Very interesting.”  And no, I’m not talking about monkey’s in bear costumes or anything like that. I’m talking about some… what you would call… either smart or sneaky techniques people are using in the marketing world. Yes, just in time for Christmas – some clever Black Hat stuff!

But are the following things really Black Hat? or just creativity? You tell me….. Here are two I just ran into.

On black Friday I wanted to see if Kohl’s  had any good sales going on, so I went to google and typed in “kolh’s”. Yes, I unknowingly spelled it wrong.  Still, Not knowing I spelled in wrong, I clicked on the #1 result in google. Which was http://www.kolhs.com. Go head click on it… It brings you to your classic email submit. My guess the person who got their zip submit to #1 in google for the keyword “Kolhs” on Black Friday made a pretty penny.  While it is slightly sneaky, E-Mail submits are sneaky just being e-mail submits. Did this person really do anything immoral?

The second one I recently  is a little bite more sneaky and I wonder how much money this person is truly making off of it. I was search for free children’s stuff. Things my little 3 year old niece & I could color or cut out. In my search I ran across this “lens” at Squidoo: http://www.squidoo.com/freebiesbest  As you can see it looks like a bunch of legitimate free samples. BUT fill out a form for any of the free samples and after you push “submit” you will be redirected to some sort of zip submit. Go ahead – try it out. Now that sneaky… or maybe creative.

I  have yet to make up my mind about these techniques. Black hat is great for fast money, and white hat works better for long sustainable money. But a lot of affiliate marketing seems to be grey.

Where does everyone out their stand with their views? What techniques have made you the money ???

Love,

Becky : )
